Close Quarters is a quarterly conversation with one or two interdisciplinary artists, designers, or craftsmen. Sometimes at the artist’s studio, these events allow for close, hands-on examination of work and engaging dialog. For our first Close Quarters of 2017, we will be visiting the studio of letterpress printer John Fitzgerald.
Close Quarters: John Fitzgerald
January 12, 6-8pm (presentation starts at 6:30pm)
1243 St. Bernard Avenue, New Orleans
John Fitzgerald is the owner-operator of Fitzgerald Letterpress, a small specialty print shop in New Orleans. John has been printing for pleasure, business and artistic expression since childhood. He had a career in commercial offset printing, which ended when advances in digital graphics revolutionized the printing trades and many jobs were eliminated. John took a step back in time to re-create the old and irreplaceable ways of fine printing. In addition to custom letterpress printing, John creates fine art prints combining linoleum cuts and type. His work can be seen every day at the Dutch Alley Artists’ Co-op in the French Quarter.
