Close Quarters is a quarterly conversation with one or two interdisciplinary artists, designers, or craftsmen. Sometimes at the artist’s studio, these events allow for close, hands-on examination of work and engaging dialog. For our spring 2017 Close Quarters, we will be talking with artist Christopher Deris.

Close Quarters: Christopher Deris
April 13, 7-9pm (presentation starts at 7:30pm)
The NOCCA Institute’s 5 Press Gallery
5 Press Street at the corner of Royal and Press

Bio:
Christopher Deris devotes his skills to the love of both 3-Dimensional and 2-Dimensional media. The two dimensional arena is an infinite playground to create work that incorporates invented metaphorical images that are swayed by the currents of pop culture and social thought. His three dimensional constructions that often involve simple mechanical movements are fantastical creations that act as surrogates or metaphors for humanity. Each piece is an experiment in capturing, visually, a genuine feeling within the confines of a piece of paper or a crafted piece of wood.

Born in New Orleans and raised in Slidell, Chris graduated from Atlanta College of Art in 1998 with a Bachelor of Fine Art with a concentration in Printmaking. In 2003 he received a Masters of Fine Art in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design. His teaching experience includes three years at Rhode Island School of Design and eight years at Loyola University New Orleans. Currently he is an associate preparator at the Historic New Orleans collection.
